Mail.Ru Group and United Music Agency partner with Merlin
Mail.Ru Group, United Media Agency (UMA) and Merlin, the global digital rights agency for the world’s independent label sector, have announced a licensing agreement to use Merlin members’ audio and video content for use on Mail.Ru Group’s online platforms.
Representing the most valuable set of rights outside of those controlled by the three major labels, Merlin’s 800-strong membership commands in excess of 12% of the global digital recorded music market across more than 20,000 labels from 51 countries.
The agreement, secured via UMA, which specialises in licensing media content, will allow social network users of VKontakte, Odnoklassniki and MyWorld to access a comprehensive catalogue of the world’s most valuable independent music.
Merlin's participating members will have an opportunity to connect with Russian fans and monetise their repertoire across Mail.Ru Group’s platforms.
Boris Dobrodeev, VK’s CEO, said:
“To develop the licensed online music market within Russia it is vital that VKontakte, Odnoklassniki and MyWorld can meet consumer demand and supply the most comprehensive repertoire of catalogue. Our agreement with Merlin allows us to achieve this in a single licence, and to offer Russian fans music from the world’s leading independent artists.”
Charles Caldas, CEO Merlin, added:
“The Russian market is one of enormous potential for Merlin’s global membership. Our partnership with Mail.Ru Group and UMA marks an important step forward to realising this, and ensuring that independent labels and their artists are properly compensated for use of their music.”
