Hilton Roth is a prominent figure in the South African electronic music and pioneer of the digital music business in South Africa. B
orn in Zimbabwe, he has been living in Cape Town since 1987 and active in the music industry since 1992. Starting in community radio and music journalism, he started one of Cape Town’s first dance music stores Solid Records in 1994, and in 2000 co-founded the cult afro-electronic music label African Dope Records, widely recognised as one of SA’s most influential electronic music labels of the 2000’s. Today, “Roach” as he is commonly known, runs African Dope Records and the spin-off music publishing & licensing business African Dope Publishing, consults on digital music and brand-music interface, and has a hand in a number of other music industry ventures such as Krushed & Sorted Studios and Sonic Spaza. Since 2007, he has been a Member of the Board of AIRCO (Association of Independent Record Companies, South Africa), heading the Digital & Website Committee.
